Add people, roles, departments and reporting lines, then arrange, download or print the chart. Mark vacant roles, switch to an outline for large teams, and use it without an account.

Step 1 of 3Chart details
Step 2 of 3People and roles
Add each person or role and choose who they report to. Reports to lists everyone except the person and the people under them, so a reporting line cannot loop. People with the same manager appear on the chart in this order; the arrows move someone past the next person who shares their manager. Removing someone moves their direct reports up to that person's manager.

Step 3 of 3Layout and print
The chart layout scrolls sideways on screen when it is wide. For printing, choose landscape in the print dialog, or switch to the outline list, which fits a large team on portrait pages.
Structure check
One person is at the top, and nobody has 8 or more direct reports.
These are hints only. They never stop you printing or downloading.

Show who reports to whom in a few minutes. This interactive org chart builder lets you add people and roles, choose each person's manager, mark vacant roles and arrange the order, then print the chart or download text and CSV copies. It opens with a fictional eight-person shop team, from the owner to a part-time bookkeeper and an open sales associate role.
Make an org chart
Give the chart a title and, if you like, the business name.
Add each person or role. Enter a role or job title for everyone; add a name and department where you have them. Up to 40 people or roles fit on one chart.
Choose who each person reports to. Pick No manager (top of chart) for the owner or the most senior role.
Tick Vacant role for a position you are hiring for. It prints as "Vacant", and the name can stay empty.
Use the arrows to arrange people who share a manager. They appear on the chart left to right in the list's order.
Choose the chart or outline layout, read the structure check, then print or download.
Use Start blank for your own team or Reset sample to see the example again. The page asks before replacing your current draft.
How to create an org chart people can use
Start from roles rather than names. A role stays when the person in it leaves, and a chart drawn from roles shows gaps: a job nobody covers, or one person covering four. Then connect each role to the one role it reports to, from the top down. Our guide to the small business org chart walks through when a chart helps, with examples for one shop and for several.
Give each person one manager where you can. The Reports to list leaves out the person themself and everyone under them, so a reporting line cannot loop back on itself. If you remove someone, their direct reports move up to that person's manager rather than disappearing from the chart.
The structure check under the layout setting gives two hints. It notes when more than one person sits at the top, since each prints as a separate chart, and it flags anyone with eight or more direct reports, who may be hard to reach during a busy shift. Neither hint stops you printing.
A chart shows who decides, not who can do what. Pair it with a skills matrix to see who is trained for each job, and plan cover in the staff rota builder. When a vacant box needs filling, the job ad maker helps write the posting, and the onboarding checklist plans the new starter's first days, including showing them where they sit on the chart.
Print or download the chart
Print / PDF opens the browser's print dialog, where you can choose a printer or save a PDF. A wide chart prints best in landscape: choose it in the print dialog. For a larger team, switch to the outline list layout, which indents each person under their manager and fits on portrait pages. On screen, a wide chart scrolls sideways.
The text download is the same indented outline, with each manager's number of direct reports. The CSV has one row per person with name, role, department, who they report to, their direct-report count and whether the role is vacant, ready for a spreadsheet.
The draft is kept in this browser tab when browser storage is available. Download a copy before closing the tab or replacing the draft.
Is this org chart software?
It is a free builder for one printable chart, not org chart software that connects to payroll or a staff directory. It does not sync with other systems, send invitations or change anyone's role. Update the chart when people join, leave or change roles, then print a new copy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make an org chart without an account?
Yes. The builder opens with a fictional team and works without a login or email address. Nothing you type is uploaded or sent.
How do I show a role we are hiring for?
Add the role, choose its manager and tick Vacant role. It prints as "Vacant", in a dashed box on the chart layout. You can add a note in the name field, such as "Hiring", and it prints in brackets.
Can one chart show two separate teams?
Yes. Put each team's most senior person at the top with No manager. Each prints as its own chart, and the structure check reminds you there is more than one top-level person.
How do I fit a large team on paper?
Choose the outline list layout. It prints an indented list that runs onto further portrait pages, where a wide chart would need landscape paper.
