Turn the details of a paid sale into a clear receipt without signing up. Choose a compact shop layout or a classic full-page layout, add your items and payment details, and check the live preview before you print. This receipt maker uses only the information you enter: it does not collect, verify or record any payment.
Start with the fictional shop sample or a blank receipt. Your draft stays in this page's memory and resets when you refresh or leave, so download a receipt file or print a copy before you go.
How to use the receipt editor
Choose Compact for a narrow shop receipt or Classic for a full-page business receipt. Switching templates keeps everything you have entered.
Replace the document title, receipt number and payment date. Enter your business name and any address, contact or registration details, and an optional customer name.
Add up to 25 items with a description, quantity and unit price in USD, CAD, GBP, EUR, AUD or NZD.
Enter any discount percentage, one tax rate and its label, then choose Cash, Card, Bank transfer or Other. For cash, enter the amount received to show change, or leave it blank for exact payment.
Add an optional payment reference and a footer note. Do not enter card or bank account numbers.
Choose Print / PDF for a formatted copy, Download text for a readable copy, or Download receipt file to reopen and edit it later.
How the receipt calculates totals and change
Each quantity times its unit price rounds to two decimal places. The discount percentage applies to the subtotal, and the tax rate applies to the discounted subtotal. Both round half up. Cash received must cover the total, and the difference is shown as change. Changing the currency changes its label only; amounts are not converted.
Here is an illustrative example using the sample's items. The 10% discount, 5% tax rate and US$50.00 cash payment are made-up figures, not suggested rates.

Printed, that sale becomes a cash receipt showing the amount received and the change. For a card or bank transfer, the receipt shows the method and treats the total as paid in full.
Keep, reopen and print your receipts
Download receipt file saves the editable details and template as a JSON file. Open that file here later to review it before it replaces the current draft. Files up to 1 MB are read on your device without uploading. Only files downloaded from this tool can be reopened.
Print / PDF opens your browser's print dialog, where you can choose a printer or Save as PDF. Compact uses an 80 mm content width when printing, and Classic uses the available page width. Paper size, margins and printer support depend on your browser and printer, so check the print preview first. Either layout gives you a printable receipt that lists every item with its quantity, unit price and line total.
You supply the tax rate; the tool does not choose it or determine which taxes apply. It does not email receipts, store transactions or write accounting records. When you need to ask for money that has not been paid yet, use the invoice tool instead.
Frequently asked questions
What should a receipt include?
Show your business name and contact details, a receipt number, the payment date, each item with its quantity and price, any discount and tax, the total paid and the payment method. An itemized receipt helps the customer match each charge to the goods they bought. Add a payment reference when a card or transfer has one.
How to make a receipt
Choose a template, replace the sample details, add your items and select how the customer paid. Check that the preview total matches the amount collected, then print or save it as a PDF. Download the receipt file too if you may need to correct it later.
Receipt vs invoice: what is the difference?
A receipt confirms a payment that has already happened. An invoice asks the customer to pay an amount that is still due. GOV.UK guidance on invoicing describes a receipt as an acknowledgment of payment. It notes that an invoice is not the same thing.
Can I use this as a sales receipt template?
Yes. The document title starts as "Sales receipt", and you can rename it. The sample shows the layout with fictional details; use Start blank to clear them while keeping your chosen template.
Is a payment receipt useful for my records?
Yes. A copy of each receipt you issue supports your sales records. The IRS lists receipt books and cash register tapes among the documents that support a business's gross receipts (IRS: what kind of records should I keep). How long to keep them depends on your situation, as the IRS guidance on keeping records explains. This page keeps nothing, so file your copies yourself.
