Standalone checklist · headoffis.com/tools/closing-checklist
Leave the next shift a store that is ready to pick up. This editable list groups floor preparation, the handover and final checks, so your closing lead can see what is finished and what needs follow-up. Name an owner for each task, tick tasks off as you close, then print or download a copy. You do not need an account, and nothing on the page is kept after you leave.
Use it as a closing checklist template for your own store, or as a simple end of day checklist for a small team. For advice on building the full daily routine, read the opening and closing guide.
How to use the checklist builder
- Enter the closing lead's name, the store or location, and the shift date.
- Review the sample against your closing procedure. Type a name in the Owner field beside each task, and remove any row that does not apply with its bin icon.
- Add missing actions with the New task field. Choose a section, then select Add task. The checklist holds up to 40 tasks.
- Tick each task as you go. The progress line shows how many tasks are complete.
- Choose Download text for a plain-text copy with owners and completion marks, or Print / PDF to print the list or save it as a PDF from your browser's print dialog. Include any open items in the next shift's handover.
What the sample covers
The starter list has three sections that follow a typical close.
- Prepare for the next shift. Tidy customer areas and return misplaced stock. Replenish priority shelves where stock is available. Check equipment and record issues for follow-up. Complete cleaning and waste routines for the store.
- Complete the handover. Follow the approved checkout and end-of-day procedure. Record unresolved stock, customer or equipment issues. Leave the next shift clear priorities and named follow-up owners.
- Final checks. Check staff and customer areas before the final departure. Set equipment and lighting according to the closing procedure. Have the authorized closing lead complete the store's final security checks.
The last section works as a short store lockup checklist. The U.S. Fire Administration's workplace fire guidance advises never leaving portable heating devices unattended, so a store that uses one might add a row to switch it off before leaving.
Adapt it to your store
The sample uses general wording on purpose, because retail closing procedures differ by store, trading hours and team size. Replace each general task with the step your team follows, and keep security details as specific as your own procedures allow.
The tool does not count cash or connect to a register. If an end of day register count is part of your close, add it as a task under Complete the handover and name the person who does it. Record the amounts in your own system; the checklist holds only text and tick marks.
Owners help when more than one person closes. Put closing manager duties, such as the final security checks, under the lead's name, and give floor tasks to the colleagues who do them. Owner names are notes in your draft; the tool does not notify anyone or send a handover.
Emergency steps belong in your own plan. Ready.gov's emergency response plan guidance covers protective actions such as evacuation, shelter-in-place and lockdown, which a lead closing alone should know.
Sections are fixed. To move a task, remove it and add it again under another section. Every task needs text before you can download or print.
Keep a copy of each close
Refreshing or leaving the page resets your draft, so download or print before you close the tab. The plain-text download lists the closing lead, location, shift date, a count of completed tasks, and every task with its completion mark and owner.
For a printable closing checklist, leave the completion boxes unticked and choose Print / PDF. The printed copy shows the checklist alone, and empty name, date and owner fields print as blank lines to fill in by hand. For the start of the next day, the opening checklist builder covers the walk-through, store readiness and team briefing.
Frequently asked questions
How to close a store at night
Prepare the floor for the next shift, complete the checkout and end-of-day process, hand over unresolved work, and have the authorized closing lead complete final checks. Replace the sample with your store's procedures where needed.
Can I change the tasks for different locations?
Yes. Edit or remove the sample tasks, add your own and enter a location name. Download each location's copy before resetting the sample or leaving the page.
Does the tool record a manager sign-off?
It records only the text and tick marks you enter in this draft. It does not verify identity, store an approval or send a handover. Keep a downloaded or printed copy if your process needs a record.
Can I reuse the closing shift checklist every night?
Yes. Download the finished copy, then choose Reset sample. After you confirm, the original tasks return and the name, location and date fields clear.
