Standalone checklist · headoffis.com/tools/opening-checklist
Start the day with a shared view of what needs to be ready. This editable list moves from an initial walk-through to customer-facing areas and a team briefing, with space to name the person responsible for each task. Tick tasks off during the opening routine, then print or download a copy. You do not need an account, and nothing on the page is kept after you leave.
Use it as an opening checklist template for your own store. Rewrite the sample tasks to match your routine, then keep a copy for each shift. For advice on building the full daily routine, read the opening and closing guide.
How to use the checklist builder
- Enter the opening lead's name, the store or location, and the shift date.
- Adapt the sample tasks to the areas and routines in your store. Type a name in the Owner field beside each task, and remove any row that does not apply with its bin icon.
- Add extra checks with the New task field. Choose a section, then select Add task. The checklist holds up to 40 tasks.
- Tick each task during the walk-through. The progress line shows how many tasks are complete.
- Choose Download text for a plain-text copy with owners and completion marks, or Print / PDF to print the list or save it as a PDF from your browser's print dialog.
What the sample covers
The starter list has three sections that follow a typical opening.
- First walk-through. Follow the approved arrival and entry procedure. Walk the customer and staff areas and report any issues. Check that aisles and designated exits are clear.
- Get the store ready. Check that the equipment needed for the day is ready. Review priority shelf gaps and replenish available stock. Check prices, signage and today's promotional displays. Prepare checkout areas using the store's opening procedure.
- Brief the team. Read the previous shift's handover and outstanding actions. Confirm today's responsibilities, deliveries and priorities. Have the opening lead review readiness before opening the doors.
The first section is a short pre opening checklist for safety and security. The U.S. Fire Administration's workplace fire guidance suggests checking for damaged or overloaded outlets, cords and cables, which fits naturally into the walk-through. If something is wrong, record it and follow your store's procedure before customers arrive.
Adapt it to your store
The sample uses general wording on purpose, because retail opening procedures differ by store, trading hours and team size. Replace each general task with the step your team follows. A store with an early delivery might add a receiving task to the second section. A store with a café corner might add its own preparation checks.
Owners help when more than one person opens. Put opening manager duties, such as the final readiness review, under the lead's name, and give floor tasks to the colleagues who do them. Owner names are notes in your draft; the tool does not notify anyone or assign saved work.
Emergency steps belong in your own plan rather than on a daily list. Ready.gov's page on business emergency plans explains why staff need prompt warnings to evacuate, shelter or lock down, and the opening walk-through is a good time to confirm exits are clear.
Sections are fixed. To move a task, remove it and add it again under another section. Every task needs text before you can download or print.
Keep a copy for each shift
Refreshing or leaving the page resets your draft, so download or print before you close the tab. The plain-text download lists the opening lead, location, shift date, a count of completed tasks, and every task with its completion mark and owner.
For a printable opening checklist, leave the completion boxes unticked and choose Print / PDF. The printed copy shows the checklist alone, and empty name, date and owner fields print as blank lines to fill in by hand. When the day ends, the closing checklist builder covers restocking, handover and final checks.
Frequently asked questions
How to open a store in the morning
Start with a walk-through, prepare customer areas and checkout equipment, check shelf gaps and signage, then brief the team. Edit the sample to match the steps and responsibilities in your store.
Can I print a fresh copy for every shift?
Yes. Leave the completion boxes unticked and choose Print / PDF for a fresh paper copy. Or enter a shift date and download a completed list at the end of the opening routine.
Is this connected to my store's systems?
No. It is a standalone planning tool. It does not read stock, operate equipment, notify colleagues or save shift records. Your changes reset on refresh or when you leave this page.
Can it be a daily opening checklist for several locations?
Yes. Enter each location's name, adjust the tasks and download that copy before you choose Reset sample. After you confirm, the original tasks return and the name, location and date fields clear.
Is it a morning checklist for retail store teams only?
No. The sample assumes a shop floor, but you can rewrite every task. Any opening shift checklist with up to 40 tasks in three sections fits.
